Nov 02, 2018 Optimage is free MAC software you can use to compress images. It allows you to compress single image or multiple images in bulk. With just simple drag and drop operation, you can bulk optimize images easily. However, here you cannot specify the custom compression level. A large picture of about 20 megapixels (5484x3646) and 5-10 megabytes in most cases can not be compressed to 200-500 KB, but if you specify 'size reducing in megapixels' up to 3 or 5, then it will be real, and without the appearance of pixelation (squares) and without jpeg artifacts due to heavy compression. The original image is not changed.
I am in Preview Version 5.0.3 (504.1). I have a PDF file that is 3.7 meg. in size. That is a big large for what I want to do with it. I would like to reduce its size to something a bit more manageable. The Preview Help gives these instructions:
Reduce Pdf Size Mac
To reduce an image’s file size without changing its dimensions:
- Choose Tools > Adjust Size.
- Select “Resample image.”
- Enter a smaller value in the Resolution field.
My problem is that in my open window for this file the 'Adjust Size' tool is dimmed. I cannot choose that tool as instructed.
Does anyone know why and how to get Preview to reduce the size of a PDF file?

You can resize or rotate an image opened in Preview to fit into a particular spot. You can also reduce the file size to save disk space or to download an image more quickly.
Change an image’s dimensions
- In the Preview app on your Mac, if the Markup toolbar isn’t showing, click the Show Markup Toolbar button , then click the Adjust Size button .
- Enter new values for width and height, or click the “Fit into” pop-up menu and choose a size.
- Resize the image by a percentage: Choose “percent” from the pop-up menu next to the Width and Height fields, then enter the percentage in those fields.
- Force the image to keep its original proportions: Select “Scale proportionally.” If you change either the width or height, the other value changes to maintain the proportions. If you choose a size from the “Fit into” pop-up menu, the image’s width or height may be smaller than the chosen size to maintain the proportions. https://heavycn.weebly.com/blog/speaker-cabinet-design-software-mac.
